Front Doors: Where to Start?
Your front door is more than just a slab. It’s a system of core materials, seals, thresholds, and finishing components, and every part plays a role in performance.
We work with leading Canadian suppliers like Entryguard and Dimensions, both known for energy-efficient and customizable exterior doors. But they don’t offer the same options, and depending on your goals (design, performance, size), one may fit your home better than the other.
Core Materials: Not All Of Them Are Equal
A front door’s strength, insulation, and long-term performance come down to how it’s built. For example:
Dimensions Steel Doors are made with 1¼” pine core for their door frames, built up to standard thickness with a vinyl extrusion. They maintain solid performance, compared to less sturdy vinyl PVC frames, which some cheaper brands offer. All Dimensions frames come standard with vinyl or aluminum cladding, adding visual appeal and improving longevity, especially on darker colours that absorb more heat outside, and providing a smooth and easy-to-clean finish inside. Doors’ key features include:
- 24-Gauge Steel Door Slab Polyurethane foam injected for insulation.
- Reinforced Anodized Sill for extra durability.
- Assembled with pins and screws with nuts for greater strength.
- Have a sealant assembly between wood components for excellent insulation.
- Come with a 15” Reinforcement Bar in the Frame where the lock & handle are located for increased strength and security.
- Ball Bearing Hinges for smooth operation.

Entryguard doors feature solid Canadian pine ¾” cores, layered to a 1¼” thick frame, with options of vinyl-clad for steel doors and fibreglass frames for fibreglass doors. These doors are crafted not only to perform exceptionally but also to elevate your home’s aesthetic.
- Fibreglass doors are engineered to withstand Canada’s toughest weather conditions while offering the timeless beauty of natural wood. Designed to replicate the rich textures of mahogany, oak, or fir, they provide a classic, elegant look without the upkeep of traditional wood.
- Also, fibreglass doors resist scratches, dents, warping, and rotting. They’re the perfect choice for homeowners seeking long-lasting durability with the warmth and charm of wood.
That’s not just a cosmetic detail — aluminum is more fade- and impact-resistant, especially in exposed or high-traffic areas.
Energy Efficiency: What Makes a Door “Efficient”?
All of our doors are ENERGY STAR® certified — but what makes one door more efficient than another comes down to construction.
Sealing and Insulation: The Unseen Difference
A good-looking door that lets in cold air isn’t worth much in Ottawa. That’s where weatherstripping systems come in — and not all are created equal.
- Entryguard offers magnetic weatherstripping that bonds directly to the steel slab. This creates a tight, consistent seal when the door is closed, without relying on pressure.

Insulated steel entry door cross-section
- Dimensions doors use compression weatherstripping, which works by compressing between the door and frame. They also use secondary brush weatherstripping on the edge of the door slab, improving performance at vulnerable corners.

Thresholds and Corner Seals
Air leakage often happens at the corners, especially near the sill. That’s why it’s worth paying attention to corner pads and how they’re integrated.
Both systems use moulded corner gaskets to reduce infiltration.
- Entryguard often uses foam gaskets and self-draining thresholds, helping water escape and reducing rot risk.

- Dimensions uses silicone-based corner pads and similar threshold profiles, with reliable drainage features.

Customization: Make It Yours
Most people don’t realize that not all door systems can be made in every size or style. Create your steel door with Dimensions up to 7ft height and up to 8ft height with Entryguard in both steel and fibreglass finishes.
Whether it’s modern new-build homes or design-driven renovations in classical homes, we have all options available.
Every Buildmart door is made to order. You’ll be able to customize:
- Material (steel, fibreglass)
- Exterior & interior colours (solid, dual-tone, wood-look)
- Glass inserts (clear, privacy, decorative, offset, full-lite)
- Sidelights & transoms for natural light and balance
- Brickmolds (vinyl or aluminum, depending on configuration)
- Hardware — multipoint locks, custom handles, keyed options
You can also match side entrance and garage-to-house doors to your main entry system for a unified look.
Glass, Brickmolds & External Details
Beyond the door slab, your configuration includes glass, brickmolds, and trims. The materials here affect both durability and appearance.
- Entryguard offers vinyl-clad brickmolds to match the door frame.
- Dimensions — white vinyl-clad or colored aluminum-clad brickmolds, matching the door frame.
- Both brands offer colonial or contemporary (flat) style glass frames.
Both options support privacy glass, sidelights, and transoms.

Sliding Patio & Garden Doors in Ottawa
A patio door should do more than open up to your backyard. It needs to insulate like a wall, lock like a front door, and move like new, for years. In Ottawa’s climate, that’s a challenge many standard patio doors simply don’t meet.
At Buildmart, we install high-performance sliding and garden doors that are designed to keep cold, wind, moisture, and noise where they belong — outside. Here’s what goes into a quality patio door, and how to know the difference:
Frame Construction & Materials
Most old patio doors use thin aluminum or wood frames with poor thermal breaks. Ours features multi-chambered vinyl or hybrid frames with integrated insulation, which helps minimize heat transfer and reduce condensation in the winter.
- Steel reinforcement is built into the frame and sash for extra rigidity — especially important for wide openings and heavy insulated glass.
- Welded corners and compression seals help maintain structural integrity and block air leakage over time.
Glass Options & Thermal Performance
We use double- or triple-pane tempered glass, filled with argon gas and coated with Low-E layers to reflect heat back into your home in winter and keep it out in summer.
These units are ENERGY STAR® certified, qualifying for Ontario energy rebates.
Our insulated glass also helps reduce exterior noise — a major bonus in urban and suburban settings.
Security You Can Count On
Basic patio doors can be a weak point in home security. Many legacy models can be lifted off their tracks with minimal force.
That’s why all of our sliding patio doors now include:
- Steel frame reinforcement
- Two-point locking systems by default (not as an upgrade)
- Anti-lift blocks to prevent tampering from the outside
- Optional key locks and foot locks for added peace of mind
Garden-style French doors use multi-point latching hardware as well, ensuring tight closure and strong resistance against forced entry.
Smooth Operation, Even in Winter
Ottawa winters can freeze lesser doors shut. Ours are built with stainless steel rollers on a self-lubricating track system, so they glide smoothly even in freezing temperatures.
The sill system includes built-in weep holes for drainage, helping prevent ice buildup and water pooling.
Handles are ergonomic and tested to resist wear, rust, and fading.
Custom Sizes, Configurations & Finishes
We offer a wide variety of layout options — from 2-panel sliders to 4-panel wide openings, and center-opening configurations for larger patio walls. You can also choose:
- Custom interior/exterior colours
- Privacy or decorative glass
- Internal blinds between the panes
- Matching sidelights or transoms
Every door is made to order, with proper integration into your home’s existing opening — not retrofitted or forced.
Entry Doors Are Nothing Without Proper Installation
You can buy the best door on paper, but poor installation will cancel out every benefit. Gaps, misalignment, or rushed work lead to air leaks, moisture problems, and compromised security.
At Buildmart, we install every door ourselves — no subcontractors, no cut corners. Our team is trained, experienced, and focused on long-term performance, not quick turnaround. That’s why we back every door with a lifetime, fully transferable, non-prorated warranty.
Front Door Replacement: How Long Does It Take?
Most custom entry and patio doors take about 8 weeks from final measurements to delivery. This includes production, shipping, and scheduling your installation.
If you’re in a rush, ask about our promo models — pre-set designs that can be installed in as little as 5 weeks, depending on availability.
We always confirm timelines before you place your order, and if anything changes, we’ll let you know right away.
The Buildmart Approach
We’re not here to push a product — we’re here to help you make the right choice for your home. Every door we offer is made for Canadian weather and Ottawa standards. Every install is handled by our own team. And every client gets straightforward answers, transparent quotes, and real timelines.
Because a good front door should do more than just close — it should welcome, protect, and last.
